Here are a few cards as example…

Asian submissions to YIDFF in 1989 were mostly cultural films and promotional pieces. Ogawa Shinsuke headed the Asia Symposium to discuss the question “Why are there no documentaries from Asia?” The nearly ten Asian filmmakers on the panel—Tsuchimoto Noriaki, Yanagisawa Hisao, Takagi Ryutaro, and others—debated for an incredible six hours. At the festival’s Farewell Party, the Asian filmmakers signed a manifesto drafted by Kidlat Tahimik. Their promise to “one day soar with the wind” resonates to this day.

Chinese filmmaker Wu Wenguang won the first Ogawa Shinsuke Prize with “1966 My Days in the Red Guards” (1993), which dealt squarely with the Cultural Revolution, a censored topic in those days. With Chinese colleagues like Duan Jinchuan, he threw himself into avidly watching the films presented at the festival. He was particularly struck by the method of F. Wiseman’s “Zoo” (1993). He went home to share his excitement about the film with friends and launched a documentary magazine. The light was lit for the trademark observational style of Chinese documentary which can be seen emerging in films like “The Square” (1994 / dir: Zhang Yuan, Duan Jinchuan).

Kawase Naomi’s first international film festival experience included winning a FIPRESCI Special Mention with “Embracing” (1992) and Award of Excellence with “Katatsumori” (1994). One of the jurors for New Asian Currents was Tamura Masaki, a masterful cinematographer who had made a career with illustrious directors like Ogawa Shinsuke, Yanagimachi Mitsuo, Ishii Gakuryu (Sogo), and Itami Juzo. Kawase chose Tamura to lens her first feature fiction “Suzaku” (1997) and went on to become the youngest recipient (as of then) to win the Cannes Camera d’Or.

Claiming obscene content, Japanese customs officers denied import of the film print of “Mother Dao the Turtlelike” (1995, dir: Vincent Monnikendam), a film edited completely from archival footage from the 1920’s. Though distressed, the director allowed a cut of several seconds so that the film could be shown in the festival. He mocked, “What hospitality. The lesson is that filmmakers should bring scissors to film festivals.” Clear footage was inserted where the cut had been made, and the audience booed during the projection. In a press conference, jury chairperson Robert Kramer declared, “Footage of genitals is neither good nor bad, but censorship is bad.”

The actor inside the earliest Godzilla suits Nakajima Haruo (from Sakata) and Showa-era singer Nagisa Yoko (from Shirataka) attended sold-out screenings of their movies in the Films about Yamagata program. In later years Yamagata-born films like “Reviving Recipes” (2011), “A Voiceless Cry” (2015), and “The World’s ‘Top’ Theater” (2018) come to draw big audiences and the series became a staple oeuvre for locals at YIDFF.
